James McAvoy has said financial barriers prevent more working class people like him becoming actors.
The X-Men star said the cost of studying at drama schools means young people are not given the chance.
McAvoy, who was brought up in Glasgow’s Drumchapel, went to the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland but was only able to attend because he was given a grant.
The 42-year-old spoke out after reports that some students face debts of up to £100,000.
He said: “It doesn’t feel like we are trying to help young people who are trying to learn and become productive members of society.
“They are having to pay to become productive members of society and that’s messed up.”
