ScotRail 'sorry' after woman paid £41 to stand on crammed train from Edinburgh to Dundee

A passenger travelling from Edinburgh Haymarket to Dundee was left standing on a rammed ScotRail train after paying £41 for a ticket after the rugby on Sunday.

The customer told how lucky she was to get on one of the last trains leaving Haymarket and described how she was crammed onto the train and had to stand for the entire 90 minute journey.

Thousands of fans flocked to BT Murrayfield Stadium to watch Scotland take on Ireland in the Six Nations on March 12 where Scotland lost 7-22.

ScotRail had warned customers that Haymarket Station would be extremely busy and urged commuters to head to Edinburgh Waverley to avoid the crowds.

They shared on social media: "Rugby fans should allow extra time heading home. Haymarket station has limited access caused by the redevelopment of an adjacent building.

"Due to this, we're unable to provide our normal queueing system after the game. Head to Edinburgh Waverley if you can to avoid the queues."

The raging passenger who had paid £41.50 for her ticket from Haymarket to Dundee said: "What an absolute disgrace!

"£41.50 to stand crammed all the way to Dundee. I was one of the lucky ones, the amazing ground staff managed to squeeze me onto the last train north at Haymarket.

"Many others were left stranded despite their best efforts."

She added: "Three carriages after the rugby match - what a joke. Zero respect for their own staff and zero respect for their customers."

Images showed dozens of commuters standing next to each other crowded into a train carriage with not much space to move.

Phil Campbell, ScotRail Head of Customer Operations, said: “We know that one of the biggest concerns for our customers is busy trains, and we are sorry to any customer who experienced overcrowding on their journey at the weekend."

He continued: “To help rugby fans travel to and from yesterday’s match, we added more seats to key trains in and out of Edinburgh throughout the day, but it wasn’t possible to add extra carriages to every train.

“Services were expected to be busy, so in the lead up to the game, we encouraged customers to plan ahead and allow additional time for travel as they may not have been able to board their first train of choice.”
