ScotRail services in operation today as Network Rail workers strike for second day

ScotRail services across the country will be cancelled once again today as rail workers take to picket lines for the second day this week.

The rail firm will operate just five services in the central belt of Scotland on Thursday - with the final trains calling around 6.30pm.

It comes as Network Rail staff stage another day of walkouts amid a dispute over working conditions, potential redundancies and pay.

ScotRail says that it will be unable to operate a number of services on the network as many of the staff absent are in safety-critical roles.

Signallers and rail maintenance workers are among those taking part in the strike action.

And there will be similar disruption on the rail network on Saturday, with more industrial action taking place on Saturday.

The RMT union confirmed that Thursday’s strikes will go ahead and has blamed the UK Government for a breakdown in talks over their demands.

Mick Lynch, the RMT’s General Secretary, said: “Grant Shapps has wrecked these negotiations by not allowing Network Rail to withdraw their letter threatening redundancy for 2,900 of our members.

“Until the government unshackle Network Rail and the train operating companies, it is not going to be possible for a negotiated settlement to be agreed.

“We will continue with our industrial campaign until we get a negotiated settlement that delivers job security and a pay rise for our members that deals with the escalating cost of living crisis.”

ScotRail services in operation on Thursday

ScotRail has said that five services will be in operation across its network on Thursday - with similar disruption expected on Saturday.

The firm has urged Scots to only travel if necessary and should plan ahead if they plan on doing so.

Services that will be operating on Thursday between 7.30am and 6.30pm are:

  • Edinburgh to Glasgow via Falkirk High
  • Edinburgh to Bathgate
  • Glasgow to Hamilton/Larkhall
  • Glasgow to Lanark
  • Edinburgh to Glasgow via Shotts
