One service from Ayr to Glasgow completely broke down with passengers left stranded for more than two hours while a recovery train was ordered.
The 7.35am service from Ayr to Glasgow ground to a halt between Miliken Park and Howwood in Renfrewshire with passengers left stuck onboard as temperatures plummeted.
The broken down train led to a ripple effect throughout the entire network causing mayhem.
Bosses have vowed to put on a limited between Glasgow and Ayrshire and Inverclyde but official information on ScotRail's website says that disruption will be expected until the end of today.
Passengers were left out in the cold at stations along the Ayr to Glasgow route, with some passengers at Barassie station left fuming as they waited for trains that never arrived.
Train operator ScotRail allowed passengers to use valid tickets on Stagecoach bus services with replacement buses also being put on at Kilwinning, Ayr and Glasgow Central.
Travel bosses have apologised for the heavy disruption caused on a day of travel chaos.
It comes as services are set for a winter shutdown with more RMT strikes planned for this week.
David Simpson, ScotRail Service Delivery Director said: "Unfortunately, the extremely cold weather has affected some of our trains today, with four experiencing train faults, which led to very significant delays on the affected routes. We’re sorry for the disruption this has caused customers.
“Services on the Inverclyde and Ayrshire routes will be severely disrupted for the remainder of today.
"We’re working on plans to operate a limited service between Glasgow and Ayrshire and Inverclyde for the remainder of the day, and we’ll update customers on those plans as soon as we can.”
