ScotRail and Traffic Scotland issue updates in aftermath of Storm Gerrit

SCOTRAIL and Traffic Scotland have provided a number of updates on Friday morning as travel disruption continues in the aftermath of Storm Gerrit.

However, services are beginning to return to normal with the train operator confirming “all lines have reopened with the exception of Dumfries to Kilmarnock”.

It also confirmed that there are some routes which will be operated by replacement buses and reminded people that tickets dated for December 28 could be used on December 29 and 30.

The latest update said: “Trains from Glasgow Central to Carlisle via Dumfries will terminate at Kilmarnock.

“Trains from Carlisle to Glasgow Central via Dunfermline will terminate at Dumfries. Buses are shuttling between Kilmarnock and Dumfries.

“Following further adverse weather, some early morning services on the West Highland Line will be operated by replacement buses.”

Road updates

Roads across Scotland are also generally returning to normal although Traffic Scotland did issue some updates on Friday morning.

Shortly after 7am, it said that the snow gates at Braemar and the Spittal of Glenshee are closed due to “forecast weather conditions”.

Meanwhile, it also provided an update on the A82 shortly after 8am and said: “A82 – Invermoriston to Invergarry. Remains CLOSED in BOTH DIRECTIONS due to fallen trees following Storm Gerrit.”

However, it added: “@NWTrunkRoads confirm the A87 open from Invergarry at the A82 junction and the A887 is open from the A82 Invermoriston.”

Power cuts

Meanwhile, more than 1000 homes across Scotland remain without power as the post-storm clean-up begins.

Around 1500 homes experienced their second night without power with people in the north east and Shetland worst affected.

SSEN said the remaining homes should be reconnected on Friday with welfare fans serving hot food and drink to affected customers from 9am.

Operations director Andy Smith said: “This has been a difficult couple of days for the communities affected and I’m grateful to them for their patience and support as our teams work extremely hard to restore power.”
