Scotland suffered the first defeat of their 2026 World Cup campaign on Friday night as they were edged out 1-0 by Morocco. The deciding goal came early in the evening, with Ismael Saibari lacing a rocket past Angus Gunn with just 71 seconds played, and Scotland never quite responded. After a turgid first period, the Scots were much improved after the break but still struggled to break down their opposition, the champions of Africa.
Clarke made proactive changes in the second half, introducing Ben Gannon-Doak off the bench alongside Lyndon Dykes and Kenny McLean, but the goals would not come despite the match momentum swinging firmly in Scotland’s favour. For all their improvement, though, the match came and went without a shot on target. Morocco were not much better, only managing two.
There was controversy, too, as Scotland were denied multiple penalty shouts from John McGinn and Scott McTominay, and an injury headache as Kieran Tierney was forced off in the second half. Catch up with the action as it happened below with Standard Sport’s dedicated match blog, complete with expert analysis from Arthur Ferridge at the Boston Stadium.

Gannon-Doak then fouls Mazraoui off the ball, and Morocco are presented with a great attacking set-piece. They have a free-kick, 18-yards from the by-line on the left flank.

Scotland 0-1 Morocco
Friday 19 June 2026 23:22 , Arthur Ferridge
22mins: A slightly better spell for Scotland, here, as they enjoy a longer period in possession. They are struggling to get any go-forward ball, though, with a speculative long ball from Patterson to Adams their most inventive moment.
Fortunately, Adams is tripped by Diop and the Scots win a free-kick.

Scotland 0-1 Morocco
Friday 19 June 2026 23:16 , Arthur Ferridge
15mins: Scotland are set up in quite a passive system out of possession. They make a rare foray forward but the move is over before it really even begins as Patterson miss-hits a pass and Morocco race away on the counter.
Scotland 0-1 Morocco
Friday 19 June 2026 23:12 , Arthur Ferridge
12mins: Morocco take a corner short and work to the byline via a nice combination play, but Hanley deploys a no-nonsense clearance.
Scotland 0-1 Morocco
Friday 19 June 2026 23:10 , Arthur Ferridge

With 15 minutes to kick-off, a reminder of today’s teams.
Scotland XI: Gunn, Robertson, Hanley, Tierney, Hendry, Ferguson, Patterson, McGinn, Christie, McTominay, Adams

The Moroccan starting XI is read out and Ayyoub Bouaddi gets comfortably the biggest cheer, with Ismael Saibari and Yassine Bounou close seconds.
Ben Gannon-Dropped
Friday 19 June 2026 22:38 , Arthur Ferridge
In a surprise move from Steve Clarke, Ben Gannon-Doak has been dropped for this tie.
He was arguably Scotland’s best player facing Haiti, with his direct dribbling and quick feet keeping the Grenadiers on the back foot for much of the evening. He linked up nicely with Che Adams, too.
But as Clarke goes more defensive here, the Bournemouth man finds himself cut out.
One could argue he’d have provided a nice pacey outlet in what may be a more counter-attacking setup, but it is Adams who leads the line here alongside Ryan Christie, who, to be fair, isn’t slow.

1998 flashback
Friday 19 June 2026 22:34 , Arthur Ferridge
Morocco beat Scotland in their final group stage outing at the 1998 World Cup.
The Atlas Lions won 3-0 as Craig Burley was sent off. Salaheddine Bassir hit a brace either side of Abdeljalil Hadda’s strike moments into the second-half.

I anticipate Scotland will play in their home kit today, for the first time at this World Cup.
Morocco should be in their usual red.
Steve Clarke previews the tie
Friday 19 June 2026 22:24 , Arthur Ferridge
“Is this match as difficult as the Brazil game? Yes, absolutely. Morocco reached the semifinals in Qatar, and I think this Moroccan team is very good, if not the best.
“I believe this Morocco team is better than the 2022 team, and we are the underdogs.
“I expect Morocco to have more possession than us. When we have the ball, we have to be a real threat.
“I think Morocco’s reliance on young players has raised the team’s level. Bouaddi caught everyone’s attention in the first game, and our task now is to make sure he does not attract the same attention in the second match.”

Suppose it goes without saying, but the atmosphere here is absolutely superb. I today have the privelege of sitting next to an open window rather than being sequestered away in an enclosed press box, so I am getting a much clearer feel of the vibe in the ground.
Needless to say, it's a party for both sides.
Who is Ayyoub Bouaddi?
Friday 19 June 2026 22:14 , Arthur Ferridge
Arsenal are among the various European heavyweights with an eye on Ayyoub Bouaddi.
The 18-year-old French-born Moroccan international plies his trade at Lille, where he enjoyed a breakout campaign last season. He seems a dead cert to get a big move this summer after impressing in the middle of the park against Brazil last week.
Let’s see if he can repeat the trick today...
Morocco team
Friday 19 June 2026 22:04 , Arthur Ferridge
Morocco have gone full-strength here, totally unsurprisingly. They know their campaign could be in real trouble if they don’t come out with a win here.
A firm defence of three Premier League stars plus Achraf Hakimi starts, with the widely adored Ayyoub Bouaddi in the middle. Brahim Diaz lines up on one wing, with Ismael Saibari at centre-forward.
Scotland team
Friday 19 June 2026 21:54 , Arthur Ferridge
So, it seems Steve Clarke has opted for a back five as he faces a Morocco team with far more attacking impetus than Haiti.
Gannon-Doak has been bumped out of the team as Scotland opt for a nice compact midfield of McGinn, McTominay and Ferguson, with a front two of Christie and Adams.
They’ll look to hit soak up pressure at the back and hit Morocco on the counter.

The Scotland team have arrived here in Boston and are out for their pitch inspection. They do look the part in their matching suits and white trainers - spick and span.
The conditions today are quite a bit nicer than they were on Friday night. There is a whipping wind in Foxborough, which may grow irritating, but has at least dispelled some of the horrible, muggy humidity which tends to hang over the east coast of the US in the summer.
It is cool and pleasant here, and we have a tantalising fixture to look forward to in just over 90 minutes. How can you not love the World Cup?!

Standard Sport prediction
Friday 19 June 2026 21:04 , Arthur Ferridge
Scotland will need to produce a markedly better performance than what they served up against Haiti if they are to avoid defeat here.
Morocco were slick, aggressive and up for the fight against Brazil, undone only by a moment of individual brilliance.
Can Clarke’s men conjure up another historic victory?
Morocco to win, 2-1.
Morocco early team news: Full complement available
Friday 19 June 2026 20:54 , Arthur Ferridge
As for the Moroccans, there are no injury concerns for manager Mohamed Ouahbi. He will be placing his faith in the same group of players that practically played Brazil off the park for much of their opening encounter, with young midfield star Ayyoub Bouaddi showing why he is being linked to some of the top sides in Europe as he ran the engine room.
Ismael Saibari, the PSV forward destined for Bayern Munich, is likely to lead the line again after his deft chip against Brazil, while their right-hand side is where they carry the most threat through captain Achraf Hakimi and Real Madrid’s Brahim Diaz.

Scotland early team news: One absentee
Friday 19 June 2026 20:46 , Arthur Ferridge
For Scotland, there is one injury concern. That is former Nottingham Forest defender Scott McKenna, who suffered a calf injury before the win over Haiti.
He missed training once more in Charlotte, North Carolina on Wednesday.
It seems unlikely that he will feature here. Otherwise, Clarke has a full complement to pick from.
