SCOTLAND has ushered in 2023 as revellers across the country celebrated Hogmanay.
Many partygoers defied the weather warnings for snow and ice with event organisers of Edinburgh’s world-famous Street Party confirming that 40,000 revellers attended the party in the capital.
It was the first time the event had been held in three years as midnight was marked by a spectacular fireworks display.
Leader of City of Edinburgh Council Cammy Day said: “Once again, Edinburgh’s Hogmanay celebrations have been the envy of cities across the globe.
“With one of the most impressive fireworks displays against the most stunning of backdrops this was a fantastic way to ring in 2023.
“We’ve brought 40,000 revellers from all over the UK and further afield to discover our great capital city and tonight has truly been an international celebration of Scotland.”
David Robertson, Police Scotland’s event policing lead for the event, thanked all officers and staff who helped ensure the event “passed without serious incident”.
Elsewhere, Stirling celebrated the new year with a stunning fireworks display over the National Wallace Monument.
The city’s council leader, Chris Kane, said: “Stirling brought in the bells in typically stunning fashion with an amazing fireworks display over the National Wallace Monument.
“The colourful spectacle was a fitting finale to our diverse festive events programme which proved hugely popular.
“I would like to wish all our residents a Happy New Year and wish them all the best for 2023.”
A full day of events is set to be held in Edinburgh with musicians to perform in venues across the Old and New Towns.
The culmination of the three-day celebration will be the Final Fling, an outdoor concert held in Princes Street Gardens.
