The skies in northern parts of Scotland were once again beautifully illuminated by the aurora borealis on Sunday night and Monday morning, streaking the heavens with dazzling greens, yellows and whites.
Images of the spectacular light show were captured by Morag Macleod and her husband Kenny as they travelled home to Nairn, and were posted on Twitter and Facebook. Spotting the natural phenomenon during their journey home, they headed for the beach at Nairn overlooking the Moray Firth and took several pictures using their smartphones.
Mr Macleod, who works for Scotrail, can be seen in the image admiring the display in a photograph shot by his wife. In an equally spectacular picture, Morag is seen in a breathtaking shot framed by Kenny, reports the Daily Record.
The Northern Lights used to puzzle people for centuries before progression in technology and astronomy brought experts to the conclusion that the display happens when particles from space enter Earth's atmosphere at high velocity. Electrically charged particles entering the atmosphere are attracted to the magnetic North and South Poles.
