Scotland set for freezing temperatures and wintry showers as Arctic blast arrives

The weather in Scotland is set for freezing temperatures and wintry showers as Arctic gusts blow across the country.

According to the Met Office, an area of low pressure is beginning to move in allowing gusts of chilly air to spread across Scotland and the rest of the UK from today.

Despite being well into spring, things will feel rather wintry as temperatures plummet as low as -1C in northern Scotland over the next few days. The chill will move eastwards, spreading nationwide by Tuesday morning with things turning extremely chilly amid high chances of snow.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Jason Kelly said: “This week will see temperatures below average for the time of year for many. Blustery winds will become confined to the far northeast overnight, with winds falling light elsewhere. This will allow widespread frost by night, though in sunshine by day, it should feel pleasant enough.

"Wintry showers will continue across the northeast, becoming confined to Orkney and Shetland by tomorrow afternoon."

As we reach the later stages of the week, low pressure will begin to return from the southwest bringing a period of heavy range at times.

Temperatures are set to turn milder in southern areas but things will remain colder in the northeast with further risk of wintry showers.

Looking into the upcoming bank holiday weekend, Deputy Chief Meteorologist Nick Silkstone said: “It will potentially take until the end of the week for the milder air to push as far north as northern Scotland.”

Milder air will push temperatures upwards once more, with temperatures a little above average during the bank holiday weekend.

Scotland's central belt will see temperatures in the mid-teens over the weekend, with things remaining mainly dry. However, conditions will be a little colder in more northeastern areas, with 9C averages in Aberdeenshire and across the Highlands.

Looking into next week, things will look fairly settled at first, with a good deal of both dry and mild weather.

The odd shower is expected across much of the country as things remain uncertain when looking ahead to the Coronation weekend.
