A new study from VisitScotland has revealed the "romance capitals" of Scotland ahead of Valentine's Day.
Amid the cost of living crisis, with many couples unable to afford overseas holidays, some are looking closer to home for an intimate getaway. According to VisitScotland, searches in the UK for 'romantic breaks Scotland' have increased by 218 per cent over the past month.
With so many people looking to spend Valentine's Day in Scotland with their other half, VisitScotland surveyed 2,000 people from across the UK to uncover where in the country they had a special connection to and why. Coming in joint first in the study are the Highlands and the Isle of Skye.
To help couples decide where to live out their romantic Scottish story ahead of February 14, VisitScotland has pulled together a list of the five most romantic places to visit, according to their survey, to inspire a break fit for a fairytale.
The top romantic locations were pulled by looking at the percentage of survey respondents who said they had a special connection with the regions because they visited with a romantic partner.
The Highlands are known for being romantic, as well as its unique culture, dramatic landscapes, magnificent castles, and fascinating history. VisitScotland singled out Moray Speyside for its "gentle climate and lush farmland" as well as its many whisky distilleries.
Meanwhile, the Isle of Skye was praised for exuding "peace, beauty and reinvigoration", and for being the "perfect escape for lovers looking to reset from the noise of everyday life". Its breathtaking mountains, miles of dramatic coastlines, and captivating history make it a perfect spot to head this Valentine's Day.
Placing in second is Edinburgh, while the surrounding Lothians regions follow in third. Stating that it has the "perfect balance of history, nightlife, attractions and architecture", VisitScotland recommended a trip to the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh for a date idea.
The tourist organisation said that East Lothian, Midlothian, and West Lothian are ideal for couples looking for a more intimate and quiet getaway. Though there is an abundance of attractions and enchanting scenery to explore, VisitScotland singled out the seaside town of North Berwick as a potential date spot.
In joint fourth position are Stirling, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs. VisitScotland commented: "Stretching across central Scotland from east to west, the landscapes of Stirling, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs are so diverse, with the historic city of Stirling, stunning countryside and countless mountains and glens to enjoy. These areas are the perfect escape for those looking for a mix of city and natural Scotland."
The final two Scottish destinations to appear in the study are the Orkney and Shetland islands, in fifth and sixth position respectively. VisitScotland praised the "enchanting" and "untouched" former for their "miles of coastline, beautiful beaches, and views as far as the eyes can see".
Meanwhile, having been named one of Europe’s Top 10 best destinations in 2019 by Lonely Planet, Shetland is not only home to some incredible landscapes and a "Viking heritage second to none", but also vibrant restaurants, bars, and music.
