Scotland's funniest gritter names as snow ploughs hit the roads amid blizzard

Temperatures have plunged in Scotland this week as the Met Office predicted lows of a chilly -10C degrees.

With the colder weather came snow and ice for some parts of the country, as the forecaster warned people should take extra care on the roads and whilst out walking.

To keep people safe, Scotland's fleet of gritters have been out working hard spreading salt on the roads and clearing paths - but their snow-busting skills aren't what they're best known for.

Scots have found a way to add some humour into the colder weather by giving their gritters hilarious snow pun names, much to the delight of fans on social media.

The trend first kicked off in Scotland in 2006 when primary school children were asked to submit the most inventive names for the machines.

Some of the funniest entries have captured the imagination of people across the globe as thousands of people share the best ones over social media.

Scots have also been able to track their favourites on the Traffic Scotland website since 2016.

And given the recent downturn in temperatures, a number of them have already hit Scotland's roads in recent days.

Historical figures William Wallace (William Wall-ice) and Mary Queen of Scots (Mary Queen of Salt) have been spotted out working today.

Queen star Freddie Mercury (Spready Mercury) and Britney Spears (Gritney Spears) are also part of the fleet.

Five gritters were also named in memory of James Bond star Sir Sean Connery following his tragic passing earlier last year - 'Dr Snow', 'You Only Grit Ice', 'On Her Majesty’s Slippery Surface', 'TroonRaker' and 'Coldfinger'.

Others that have been spotted locally over the years include Gritter Thunberg, Darth Spreader and Ploughlo Grittini, as well as Hansel and Grit-All and Calvin Harr-Ice.

Scots can track the gritters on the Traffic Scotland website.
