Scotland players rated after abysmal showing in Nations League humbling against Ireland

Scotland players rated after abysmal showing in Nations League humbling against Ireland

Craig Gordon 5

Produced a superb late reaction save in opening five-minutes. Tried to come for corner at opener but couldn’t get near it and failed to stop ball from trickling over the line. No chance for Obafemi’s stunner.

Jack Hendry 3

Nowhere near in the right position to able to head ball away for Ireland first. Allowed Duffy a free header AGAIN from another dangerous corner, Gordon managed to save. Subbed by Clarke at HT.

Grant Hanley 4

Bullied off the ball by Obafemi far too easily, with the defender misjudging the striker’s pace. Failed to clear Duffy knock-down for Browne’s goal. Expecting much better performance from experienced centre-half.

Scott McKenna 5

Beat to header by Duffy which led to Ireland’s first goal. Wasn’t his man to be fair, but was still struggling like rest of defence. Cleared ball off the line to prevent further embarrassment.

Anthony Ralston 4

Great strength to outmuscle McClean off the ball and get dangerous ball in from by-line. However,  Badly at fault for Parrot’s goal – stopped tracking his man. Ireland had some decent joy down his side.

Scott McTominay 4

Suffered knock in first minute but seemed to shake it off okay. Like his fellow midfield he was overrun far too easily by energetic Irish players.

Callum McGregor 4

Failed to get close enough to Obafemi at Ireland’s second. Striker chopped inside the Celtic skipper and clipped a delightful ball inside the Scotland defence. Missed interception before Obafemi unleashed his wonder strike. Never hid to be fair to him, unlike some.

Andy Robertson 4

Very poor with his deliveries throughout, which is so unlike him. Looks shattered like several other members of the team. It shouldn’t be an excuse after this game, though.

John McGinn 3

Gifted free hit from 20-yards early on, but his shot was straight at the keeper. Another quiet and poor match for the country’s usual talisman.

Ryan Christie 3

Ineffective playing off the left. Far better in a central position, just off the striker. Boshed off the ball in a 50-50 challenge, which summed up Scotland’s entire performance. Booked.

Che Adams 4

Looked like a tired and lonely figure up top. Had no service and very little support around him.

Subs:

Billy Gilmour (for Hendry, 46’) 3

Tried to asset himself in middle of the park. Brushed off ball far too easy before Ireland’s third goal from range.

Stuart Armstrong (for McGinn, 58’) 3

Made some decent runs and at least showed some effort, his crossing let him down, though.

Ross Stewart (for Adams, 58’) 3

Given a better chunk of the match to try show what he could do.

Jacob Brown (for Christie, 58’) 3

Had one header but was comfortably saved by the keeper.

John Souttar (for McKenna, 73’) 2

On to replace McKenna due to injury. Unsure why he was dropped from the start.
