Scotland Northern Lights alert this weekend amid 'unusually' warm weather

People in Scotland may get a glimpse of the Northern Lights this weekend amidst a period of warm temperatures and clear skies.

The weather across the country is set to be unseasonably warm this weekend, with temperatures rising to 15 degrees Celsius in certain regions.

As reported by the Daily Record, the mild weather is due to warm air coming in from the Azores in southern Europe.

People looking up at the stars this Halloween have a chance of seeing the aurora borealis, with the Met Office reporting that the display will be observable on Saturday in parts of Scotland.

Clouds and outbreaks of rain are forecast on Saturday across the north of the country, and are predicted to be heavy in the west. Mild and sunny spells are set to emerge in the far north and later in the south.

Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern said: "What we've got during the next few days is the jet stream coming out of North America, and then strengthening on the other side of the Atlantic, because of this temperature contrast between north of the jet stream and south of the jet stream.

"Then, the jet stream dips close to the Azores before pushing north again during Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and the weekend as the warm air pushed north across Europe.

"It will be unusually warm for much of the continent, not just the UK."

Northern Lights in Scotland

The Met Office has told people in Scotland to be on the lookout for the Northern Lights, a beautiful display of green and purple colours in the night sky.

On Saturday, the aurora borealis may be seen under clear conditions. People at high latitudes have a better chance of observing the lights, though they may be visible across Scotland.

The Met Office states: "A more significant enhancement may occur late tomorrow and overnight into the 30th, with aurora potentially visible across more of Scotland where clear skies occur during night time hours."
