Homes in Scotland are amongst the most affordable to buy in the UK, but the average household will more than five times their annual disposable income for a house.
In most regions of the UK, houses are more unaffordable now than at any point since 1999, however, that’s not the case in Scotland.
Across England as a whole, the average household has to spend 8.7 times their income to buy the average house while in Scotland it’s 5.5 times.
The average home in Scotland cost £166,183 to buy in 2021, according to a new report by the Office of National Statistics (ONS).
Meanwhile, the average household had an average disposable income of £30,262 a year - that means the average household has to spend 5.5 times their income to buy the average house.
No other region in the UK has homes that are more affordable than Scotland, compared to average salaries.
However, looking at Edinburgh specifically, properties in the capital had an overall average price of £324,243 over the last year, according to Rightmove - 10.7 times the average Scottish household's income.
According to the Office of National Statistics (ONS), back in 2004, the earliest date available, the average home cost 4.3 times the average household’s income.
Homes aren’t at their most unaffordable, however. In 2008, the time of the financial crash, the average home cost 5.9 times the average salary.
