Scotland international rugby star Alex Craig opens Dumfries school's new sensory room

Scotland international rugby star Alex Craig officially opened a new sensory room in a Dumfries school.

The Dumfries-born former Stewartry lock, who plays for Premiership side Gloucester, opened the facility in the Queensberry Learning Centre at Georgetown Primary.

He performed the ceremony on behalf of Wooden Spoon Scotland, the children’s charity of rugby, which contributed £7,000 towards the facility.

The sensory room provides educational opportunities for nursery and primary aged children with severe and complex physical disabilities and learning difficulties.

It helps reduce agitation and anxiety and can also engage, stimulate reactions and encourage communication in youngsters.

contribution.

The towering 25-year-old met with pupils, staff and parents on the penultimate day of term to answer questions about his rugby career.

The Wooden Spoon charity aims to make a positive impact on the lives of disadvantaged children and young people across the four home nations in the Six Nations.

It partners with the rugby community, individuals and some of the UK’s top sporting role models whose contribution and support is invaluable. Thirty-eight regional volunteer committees undertake local fundraising activities and ensure that the money is spent on projects in their community.

Since the charity first began, more than £30 million has been committed to more than 1,000 projects benefitting more than two million young people.
