Scotland fans go wild for Trainspotting-style World Cup ad with Scott McTominay

SCOTLAND fans have gone wild for a Trainspotting-style World Cup ad featuring star player Scott McTominay as the team prepare to open their campaign against Haiti.

The "Choose Scotland" Adidas advert is narrated by Lewis Capaldi and sees McTominay wandering through the streets of Naples where he plays his club football for Napoli with his bags packed as he receives handshakes and waves from adoring fans, nabbing a slice of pizza for his travels.

This scene is interspersed with replays of the midfielder's famous overhead kick at Hampden Park against Denmark as well as the crowd going nuts for the team as they qualified for their first World Cup in 28 years.

The clip also features captain Andy Robertson calling McTominay from the back of a taxi saying "are you on your way to the airport or what?"

Over the top of the exciting montage is Capaldi providing some Trainspotting-style commentary all about backing the "underdog" country to the hilt with Iggy Pop's Lust For Life in the background.

Capaldi says: "You can be born anywhere. That's chance. The rest is choice.

"Choose the sun in Naples and the rain in Glasgow. Choose heading to a World Cup. Choose tattie scones on a Tuesday and pizza on a Wednesday.

"Ignore everyone telling you it's easier the other way and embrace being the underdog. And choose a skipper who is always on duty.

"Chose getting absolutely written off and getting up and showing them anyway.

"You can't choose where you're born. But you can choose who you stand with. Choose Scotland."

Fans have gone wild for the minute-long ad online describing it as "f****** epic", particularly praising the theme of choosing to follow the team even if you weren't born in the country.

Italy have not qualified for the World Cup themselves, with the Adidas campaign urging to back Scotland in McTominay's honour.

Sharing the ad, Scottish football account Pie & Bovril posted on Twitter/X: "Magnificent."

MSP Stephen Gethins added: "‘You can’t choose where you are born but you can choose who you stand with’ - brilliant."

Comedian Mark Nelson said it might be "the best thing I have ever seen".

Scotland kick off their campaign in the early hours of Sunday morning UK time against Haiti before facing Morocco next week and Brazil later in the month.
