The Scotland Euro 2024 squad have been knocked out of the tournament.
Steve Clarke's faced an uphill battle in Germany from the tenth of their opening game against the hosts, when they went 1-0 down to a Florian Wirtz strike. Eventually, they lost that game 5-1, with Ryan Porteous also sent off for a dangerous challenge on Ilkay Gundogan.
In their second match, against Switzerland, Scotland were a lot more promising. While they only walked away with a point, the Tartan Army were confident that if they performed in a similar way in their final Euro 2024 group match against Hungary, then a place in the last 16 would be likely.
Unfortunately for them, though, Scotland failed to display those same levels against Hungary. While a win was needed, Clarke's side stuttered and faltered against their opponents before eventually conceding a 100th-minute goal.
Had they won, four points would have been enough for them to qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament in third place - instead, they were sent home early. Scotland's wait to reach the knockout stages of a major tournament continues.

Steve Clarke gives very little away in front of the TV cameras - every word is a prisoner - so it's just as well that his work speaks for itself.
Back-to-back qualifications for the Euros don't happen by accident: the 60-year-old is meticulous and tactically sound, but, more than anything, he's brought about total buy-in by instilling genuine belief. It's a shame he failed to inspire the nation to their first knockout stages.

The relentless midfielder is a manager's dream, putting in the hard yards off the ball but crucially, popping up in the key contributions in the heat of the moment. After inspiring Villa to the Champions League, though, it seemed like he struggled to dip into his energy reserves this summer as he struggled in Germany.
