Jinkies, it’s official - Scooby-Doo character Velma Dinkley has come out as a lesbian following years of fan speculation.

Not only that, the bespectacled super sleuth is set to get her first official love interest in the shape of new character Coco Diablo in latest animated movie Trick or Treat, which was released on Tuesday.

Clips from the new film have been shared online and show Velma crushing on glamorous costume designer Coco and the feelings appear to be mutual, with the character referring to Velma as “the cute one”.

The move comes 53 years after the character was first introduced in the Hanna-Barbera-produced cartoon back in 1969 and two years after James Gunn, who penned the live-action Scooby-Doo films, revealed he wrote Velma as “explicitly gay” before it was “watered down” by the studio and ultimately removed.

Fans were thrilled that Velma’s sexuality had finally been acknowledged and flocked to social media to voice their delight.

“Velma being gay is actually massive, we’re at a point in time when this major character, full of decades-old history and fans, gets to actually be a lesbian and that’s just another part of her canon now! Sometimes we need to celebrate these wins,” wrote one user on Twitter.

“Velma getting her lesbian debut after five decades thank u,” penned another, while a third put in: “I never thought I’d live to see the day when Velma is very clearly having gay thoughts on-screen.”
