Rangers fans were delighted with their team’s display against West Ham but also lined up to have a pop at Hotline regular Gordon Ashley’s praise for Celtic in their 2-2 draw with Blackburn at the weekend.
John Wilson emailed: “Gordon Ashley needs a lie down in this heat - he gushes Saturday’s game against Blackburn was one centre half away from some team. I take it he missed Siegrist’s saves and Celtic could not manage a win. Rangers beat a nearly full strength West Ham, who had been undefeated in 10 games, but somehow Gordon will make this out to be pre-season rubbish no doubt.
“He’d better hope Maeda’s in defence, because CCV will need to rugby tackle Matondo, who will rip that static defence to shreds.” Gary Stevenson, Newtonhill , emailed: “So Ashley’s Best Ever Celtic side manage a 2-2 draw with struggling English Championship side Blackburn Rovers while Rangers beat high flying English Premiership West Ham 3-1. I know, it’s only friendlies and don’t worry, Blackburn will get better.”
Scott Gowers, Edinburgh, added: “Ashley seemed to be in awe of his club’s performance against Blackburn and claims it’s the best his beloved team have performed. Rangers have just put three past a team which has qualified for European football, a club which has spent more than £40m in the transfer window and are in a higher division than Blackburn.
“I just wonder how much in awe of Rangers Mr Ashley is, after all he comments more on Rangers than his own club. Can I remind Gordon that performances don’t matter if you don’t win. It’s truly been a pleasure and good laugh reading Gordon’s comments but when VAR is in what can he possibly write about as VAR should wrong the bad decisions and uphold the good ones. Roll on VAR - a 20 point head start for Rangers over Celtic if last season’s decisions were anything to go by.
John Bruce emailed: “Rangers beat the team who finished seventh in the EPL last season 3-1, after a scintillating second-half display. West Ham just couldn’t handle the speed or movement of the Rangers team and were blown away in a 20-minute spell.
“ Souttar looked comfortable at centre half. Lawrence showed that he will be a regular scorer for Rangers and defences will be terrorised by Matondo’s electric pace. Ben Davies should be a terrific addition too. So the Rangers fans have a lot to look forward to with this exciting, new-look team.”
And Ian Mckendrick emailed: “Can I remind Mr Ashley that Rangers’ signings didn’t sign for Celtic as they didn’t want to take a step backwards.”
George Wilson, West Sussex, said: “Still waiting to hear from Gordon Ashley over his forecast £8 million maximum Rangers were going to get for Calvin Bassey. He’s now hoping we all forget and has conveniently moved on to Malik Tillman and apparently he’s rubbish now.
“Quite frankly I had never heard of Tillman before this week and I’m sure Ashley hasn’t either. Just another example of his obsession of everything Rangers and his need to put them down at every opportunity. No doubt Celtics latest 2 signings Mooy and Jenz are world beaters. Hard to say as no one has ever heard of them either.”
David Manson, Williamwood, emailed: “It’s nice to read all the Celtic fans focusing on Rangers as their own club is not much to talk about. It’s always nicer to discuss a beautiful fairy-tale than focus on ugly trolls.”
David Speirs, Coalhall, said: “I would like to point out to those Celtic fans on the Hotline these last couple of days it still seems it’s all about the Rangers. We have won 55 titles as opposed to your 52. Rangers weren’t competitive for 7 of the last 10 years and you’re only in the Champions League on the back of Rangers efforts in Europe. Let’s face it you have done nothing in Europe for years.”
Eddie Easson, Ballingry, Fife said: “As I’ve said every season nothing is won now. All new players take time to settle in. Do your shouting at the end of the season when the trophies get handed out. One thing for certain, the heads in the sand trio of Hotline regulars Wilson, Lowe and Bruce fail to understand or comprehend Rangers debts don’t disappear at the end of the season.”
But Stefan Lomako, Whithorn, emailed: “I’ve seen enough from the Celtic and Rangers’ friendlies to suggest we have some good stuff to look forward to. I don’t think Rangers will have much trouble getting into the Champions League group stage and I also look forward to seeing Ange and Gio’s plans in action.”
