Scientists solve 'space jellyfish' mystery after eerie lights spotted in sky

Scientists have solved the "space jellyfish" mystery after a bizarre glow was seen lighting up the sky.

Locals in Waycross, Georgia, in the US, were left baffled after witnessing the bright and fast moving object in the early hours of May 5.

A camera captured the footage which shows the object, which was described as a "space jellyfish" on Twitter, moving in the sky followed by a glowing oblong aura.

According to The Express, the mysterious light isn't some sort of glowing UFO but instead a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

The rocket launched from Florida's Kennedy Space Center which was approximately 250 miles from the camera.

Explaining why the rocket resembled a jellyfish, Professor Chris Combs, from the University of Texas at San Antonio said it was a combination of compressible flow physics and perfect timing.

The professor explained that the gas is illuminated by light just over the horizon.

In terms of the 'body' part of the jellyfish, he stated that what we were seeing was the exhaust leaving the rocket's engine nozzle.

The reason the exhaust took this strange shape was because of the pressure difference inside and outside the nozzle.

He wrote: "Under-expanded means nozzle exit pressure is greater than surroundings, so gas needs to expand more (drop pressure) to match.

“Over-expanded means nozzle exit P is less than surroundings—expanded too much.

“In under-expanded exhaust, you get expansion fans at the nozzle exit to decrease pressure and match background: jellyfish, at high altitude

“In over-expanded exhaust, you get shock waves to increase pressure back up to background: shock diamonds, lower altitude.”

Although this particular 'space jellyfish' was a rocket, it doesn't mean they don't exist as recently experts have discovered that waters on one of Jupiter's moons is extremely similar to "gashes" in Greenland.

Under the landform, fractured ice has created a sizeable pocket of cold waters which is brimming with life.

In those waters, you'd find various creatures such as jellyfish, slugs, shrimps and snails.
