Schools and public services could be overwhelmed when hundreds of Ukrainian refugees move to a cruise ship in Leith, it was claimed last night. The leader of City of Edinburgh Council voiced fears over the Scottish Government-chartered MS Victoria.
It docked in Leith two weeks ago to house up to 2500 refugees who have fled Vladimir Putin’s troops. It is understood the local authority was informed, rather than consulted, about the decision to base the vessel in their area.
Council leaders are now worried that staff will not be able to cope with the surge in services required for the new residents. City council leader Cammy Day said there was currently “no solution” to many of the problems, including school places for the estimated hundreds of children seeking education when term starts next month.
