Roy Race rarely scored ordinary goals for Melchester Rovers in the pages of the Tiger and Scorcher comic. Tap-ins were for others.
All Roy’s strikes seemed to involve stupendous volleys, powerful headers that would draw pangs of envy from Cristiano Ronaldo or mazy dribbles which would see half the opposition side left baffled and hopelessly beaten, perhaps with a voice bubble or two saying: “Where’d he go?”
And so to Australia where an 18-year-old schoolboy has just scored a try that saw countless defenders wondering what had just happened as the tall and rangy figure carrying the ball stepped and zigged and zagged over 60 metres before touching down.

Admittedly, Shaun Edwards would not have signed off the defence. But, still, Max Jorgensen will not score many better tries over his career.
He has been fast-tracked into the Australia A squad just one day after turning down NRL advances and signing with the NSW Waratahs. Unsurprisingly, he is being styled as a "schoolboy sensation" Down Under.
The touchdown that has attracted much attention was something else, seeing the son of former Wallaby centre Peter Jorgensen collect a kick some 60 metres out, assess his options and then start accelerating upfield. A left-footed sidestep takes out the first line of defence, then steps off the right peg account for two more would-be tacklers.
Heading for the touchline, he suddenly changes direction to leave another opposition player sliding to the ground, as if on ice. There follows a run across pitch, with Jorgensen looking for a gap, before another switch of course brings about the try.
As hinted above, Davy Crockett probably wouldn’t have rushed to recruit every one of those Jorgensen sailed past to the cause of defending the Alamo back in the day.
But credit where credit’s due: it was still some score.
