Schoolboy hopes to find family of WW1 soldier after picking up his medal in a canal

A schoolboy magnet fisherman is determined to find the family of a WW1 soldier after he fished his medal out of a canal.

Finley Hargood, 13, and his dad, Scott, enjoy the treasure hunting hobby together but usually only pick up scrap metal and the odd knife.

But Finley struck lucky when he pulled out the medal, belonging to a Mr Joseph Hughes.

Military records show Mr Hughes was a driver who served with the Royal Horse Artillery.

Finley found his medal in an old box that also contained a silver chain and necklace, plucked from the canal in Walsall, West Mids.

Dad Scott said: “We would love to be able to reunite it with Joseph’s family.

“We have done lots of research but can’t find them. Usually we just find scrap metal, and on the odd occasion knives and safes, so when we found this it was a very good day.”

The silver British War Medal was one of about 6.5million awarded to those who fought or were in service overseas during The Great War.

Scott added: “We want it to go to the family. It is memorabilia of someone’s heritage and they deserve to keep it.”
