School's tribute to 'cheeky chappy' boy who drowned at Salford Quays

A teenager who died while swimming with friends was a 'cheeky chappy' who 'certainly kept staff on their toes', his school have said. Kalen Waugh, 16, drowned at Salford Quays on Saturday.

A major search operation was launched after he got into difficulty in the water and his body was recovered later that night. Police said there were no suspicious circumstances.

In a tribute a spokesperson for New Park Academy in Eccles said: "Kalen had been swimming at the Quays with some friends and unfortunately got into difficulties. His friends all tried to help but they had to be rescued because of the currents.

"Kalen was a cheeky chappy who certainly kept staff on their toes, but not for very long, you just couldn't stay angry with him for too long. Mum had been so proud that he had sat his GCSE exams and had been offered a place at Salford College from September.

"He was a clever lad who would have done fantastically well. We will miss him and our thoughts and prayers are with mum and uncle."

Flowers and balloons have been left on a bench on the quayside close to where Kalen drowned. A fundraiser has also been set up to help pay for his funeral.

Conrad Asquith, who set up the page and works with Kalen's mum, described him as a 'lovely young man' who had 'his whole life ahead of him'. On Sunday police and council bosses again warned the public not to swim in the waters of the quays or jump off bridges.

Det Insp Joanne Johnston said: "We remind the public to avoid being tempted to cool off in reservoirs, rivers, canals or ponds. We all want to enjoy the warm weather; please make sure you do so in a safe way. Think of your family - look out for your friends." Despite the warning people were still pictured swimming there less than 24 hours after the tragedy.
