School holiday tomorrow, August 27: State-wise update on closures amid heavy rainfall

School closed tomorrow August 27: As the southwest monsoon continues to bring rain across large swathes of the country, students and parents are checking whether Thursday, August 27, will bring school closures due to waterlogging, heavy showers and other weather disruptions. Based on the latest available information, no nationwide school holiday has been declared for August 27, with such decisions typically left to state governments, district administrations or individual institutions depending on local conditions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rain across several regions, including Uttarakhand, eastern India and parts of the Northeast, with isolated heavy rainfall also expected in Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar and other areas during this period.

Delhi-NCR and Gurugram

School closure decisions carry particular weight for students in Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad and Gurugram following a string of recent rain-related disruptions. Authorities in Gurugram have introduced fresh safety protocols for school buses through the monsoon season, directing schools to avoid routing buses through waterlogged stretches and to make alternative arrangements where necessary. These measures will stay in effect until September 30 or until further notice.

Gurugram's administration had earlier shifted schools to online classes following severe waterlogging and heavy rain on August 25. Parents in the district have been advised to rely on their school's official WhatsApp groups, websites or direct communication rather than assumptions, particularly in areas where roads remain flooded.

Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand remains a key state to watch, with the IMD forecasting fairly widespread to widespread rainfall from August 26 through August 31. Given the state's hilly terrain, such rainfall raises the risk of landslides, blocked roads and disrupted school transport, meaning district administrations may order local closures depending on conditions on the ground.

Odisha

Odisha is also expected to see significant rain activity, with the IMD forecasting isolated heavy rainfall on August 27 and the possibility of very heavy rainfall in the days that follow. While several districts in the state have already seen school closures or precautionary steps during earlier bouts of heavy rain, no statewide holiday has been confirmed for August 27 as of now.

Jharkhand and Bihar

The IMD has forecast continued rainfall over Jharkhand through August 29, while Bihar is expected to see rain, including isolated heavy spells, through August 27. Neither state has a confirmed statewide school closure in place for August 27, though local administrations may step in should flooding, waterlogging or unsafe roads develop.

West Bengal and Sikkim

Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are also bracing for rainfall, with the IMD forecasting fairly widespread to widespread activity in the region, alongside isolated heavy rainfall between August 25 and 28. Districts in North Bengal and other vulnerable pockets could face localised disruptions if the rain intensifies further. Parents have been urged to depend on official district or school notices rather than unverified claims of a statewide holiday circulating on social media.
