School holiday (October 5): Will schools remain closed on Monday? When will Dussehra holidays start? Check state-wise details here

After the long weekend following the Gandhi Jayanti holiday, schools will remain open on Monday, October 5, 2026. There is no nationwide school holiday announced for October 5.

School closures will depend on state-wise academic calendars, local government orders and individual school schedules. Gandhi Jayanti was observed on October 2, while Dussehra/Vijayadashami falls later in the month on October 20. Several states have also scheduled longer festive or autumn breaks during October.

School Holiday October 5, 2026: Are Schools Closed Tomorrow?

For most states, October 5 is expected to be a regular working day unless the respective state education department or school has announced an additional holiday.

Tamil Nadu is an important exception. Schools in the state are scheduled to reopen on October 5 after the quarterly examination break. Schools remained closed from September 26 to October 4, with classes resuming on Monday.

Students should therefore not assume that schools will remain closed on October 5 because of the recent Gandhi Jayanti holiday.

Delhi, UP, Haryana School Holiday October 5

Schools in Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana are not covered by any nationwide closure on October 5. Students should follow their respective school calendars and check for any local announcements.

Delhi-NCR schools are expected to have their major autumn break later in October around the Dussehra period. Uttar Pradesh and Haryana are also expected to observe holidays around October 19 and 20 for Dussehra-related occasions.

Telangana and Andhra Pradesh School Holidays

Students in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh will have their longer festive breaks later in October.

Telangana's Dasara vacation is scheduled from October 10 to October 22, with schools expected to reopen on October 23.

In Andhra Pradesh, the Dasara vacation is listed from October 10 to October 21, with schools expected to resume on October 22.

Therefore, October 5 does not fall within the main Dasara vacation in either state.

West Bengal School Holiday October 5

West Bengal's major Durga Puja school vacation is also scheduled later in October.

The recognised-school holiday schedule includes an autumn vacation beginning around October 17, while the higher-secondary holiday schedule lists Durga Puja holidays from October 15 to October 26.

October 5 is therefore not part of the main Durga Puja school holiday period in the state.

Tamil Nadu School Holiday October 5

Tamil Nadu follows a different academic schedule. Schools remained closed from September 26 to October 4 for the quarterly examination break and are scheduled to reopen on October 5.

The state has further holidays later in October for Ayudha Pooja and Vijayadashami on October 19 and October 20, respectively.
