School bus becomes inferno after 'loud bang' heard near Lidl

This is the moment a school bus became an inferno after dropping off school children. A loud bang was heard before the vehicle was engulfed by flames near a Lidl supermarket.

No one was injured in the incident which happened in Derby on Monday (July 11) and a full investigation has now been launched. Derbyshire Live understands the vehicle caught fire after its last stop at the Blue Peter in Alvaston at around 3.40 pm.

A number of parents and students had claimed that there had been 'smoke' coming from the bus prior to it catching fire. They claim their concerns were ignored.

The bus is understood to have been the 240 Notts & Derby service carrying pupils from St Benedict's Catholic School, in Darley Abbey. The bus has been destroyed in the fire.

A spokesperson for Notts & Derby Buses confirmed that their buses only carry school and college pupils, or university students. They said a full investigation will be taking place.

The company has also said that they will be checking the remaining buses in their fleet to ensure they are safe to run. Following the incident, police cordoned off Raynesway from the Gulf roundabout, and the road remained closed for some time while the burnt bus was removed.

Both Derbyshire police and Derbyshire Fire and Rescue confirmed they were present at the incident.
