A scheming mum with “animal cunning" who ran fake fundraising appeals to con grieving families out of £1,000 has been jailed for more than two years. Chanel Bailey, 26, launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds for a memorial after befriending a woman whose premature baby died.
In total, 28 people helped raise almost £1,000 but Bailey kept the money for herself. A court heard she withdrew £935 from the crowdfunding account on January 21, 2020.
A police investigation discovered Bailey had previously scammed a mum who was desperately trying to raise funds to help her daughter in 2017. Bailey contacted the mum of a two-year-old girl via Facebook as the toddler battled a brain tumour.
