House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, a Republican from Louisiana, recently shared insights from a meeting with former President Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago. Scalise indicated that if the GOP secures both Congress and the White House, Trump would prioritize tightening laws against illegal immigration in the first 100 days of a new administration.
One of the key areas of focus would be the U.S.-Mexico border situation. Scalise mentioned that Trump could reinstate policies like the Migrant Protection Protocols, commonly known as the 'Remain in Mexico' policy, and end 'catch-and-release' practices.
Scalise highlighted the potential support from a Republican-majority Congress for Trump's immigration crackdown, emphasizing the importance of funding federal projects and programs, including border security measures like additional wall construction and enhanced tools for Border Patrol agents.
Aside from immigration, other priorities for the initial 100 days of a new administration would include revisiting electric vehicle mandates and tax policies, particularly provisions from Trump's 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act set to expire in 2025.
Scalise acknowledged the tight race for the House majority, estimating that the outcome could hinge on 40 to 45 critical races out of 435. Despite the uncertainty, he expressed optimism about the GOP's prospects and his extensive efforts to support Republican candidates across various districts.
Scalise's commitment to the election cycle was evident in his fundraising activities, having raised $70 million and actively campaigning in numerous districts. He emphasized the importance of focusing on winning and expanding the majority, rather than contemplating potential losses.
In the event of a Democratic victory in the House, Scalise clarified that he had no intention of challenging House Speaker Mike Johnson for the top House Republican position. He firmly stated his dedication to the current goal of securing and strengthening the GOP majority.
