The Jordanian city of Fuheis (13 km from Amman) is famed for its churches, orchards, olive fields, and vineyards, inspiring artists from around the region.
Some Saudi artists have chosen to live this experience at the Fuheis Festival, which opens its doors on at the Greek Orthodox Monastery Square on Wednesday.
Held under the theme “Jordan…History and Civilization”, the 30th edition of the festival blends culture and arts, and brings together singers, cinema figures, and artists from across the Arab region. Over 20 visual artists from various artistic schools are set to participate in the event.
Drawing in a sanctuary
In an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat, Saudi artist Fatimah al-Nemer spoke about her participation in the festival in partnership with Rowaq Al-Balqa Foundation for Arts. She said cultural diversity is the greatest feature of the festival.
She revealed that she had stayed in Fuheis for five days to create two works as part of a workshop. She said her artworks, “Hajiya” and “Olive Branch”, blend the cultures of the Gulf and Jordan. “The idea was to mix two cultures in one Arabic spirit,” she remarked.
She described the unique spiritual state she experienced while creating her work at the Greek Orthodox Monastery Square.
Al-Nemer also praised the local houses in Fuheis, describing it as an artistic and inspirational place that features a significant number of restaurants and crafts workshops.
Rowaq Al-Balqa symposium
Saudi artist Abdullah al-Ahmari spoke to Asharq Al-Awsat about his participation in the Rowaq Al-Balqa symposium during the Fuheis festival, saying that was taking part alongside the best Arab artists. “This artistic, cultural movement is a major hub for expertise exchange, and creative discussions,” he noted.
According to al-Ahmari, the festival will be concluded with an exhibition displaying the works of the participants. He hailed the event as a hub for artists from different Arab countries, offering them a unique and inspiring opportunity to exchange artistic views and expertise.
Jerash festival
The Saudi Arabia’s Theater and Performing Arts Commission participated in the 36th edition of the Jerash Festival for Culture & Arts last week. The participation came in light of the Ministry of Culture’s efforts, represented by the cultural associations and bodies, to boost and promote the presence of the Saudi culture at Arabic and international festivals and events, and build better cultural ties with other countries.
During the festival, the Saudi National Music Band presented several performances and a concert, including a joint performance with the Saudi National Choir, during which they presented diverse folkloric songs. The Saudi participants consisted of 35 musicians and choir members who performed a variety of Saudi songs.
