The announcement came after the sighting of the Muharram crescent moon on Monday evening.

The UAE has also confirmed Tuesday, as the first day of Muharram and the beginning of the Islamic year 1448 AH. The UAE Fatwa Council said it reached the decision after reviewing scientific data related to the crescent moon sighting in coordination with specialised scientific authorities and centres across the country.

With the beginning of Muharram, the Day of Ashura, observed on the 10th day of the month, is expected to fall on Thursday, June 25.

The Hijri New Year marks the start of the Islamic lunar calendar, which is used to determine important religious dates and observances throughout the year.

The occasion commemorates the Hijra, the migration of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from Mecca to Medina, an event regarded as a defining moment in Islamic history and the starting point of the Islamic calendar.

In its statement, the Saudi Supreme Court also offered prayers for the continued success of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman and Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, and for unity and solidarity among Muslims worldwide.
