The death of a "fun and sassy" teenager who was "drastically let down" by health professionals has prompted urgent calls for action.
Katie Wilkins was just 14 when she died on July 31, 2020 at Alder Hey hospital after a short battle with a rare form of leukaemia (APML). Last month, an inquest held at the Liverpool Gerard Majella Courthouse ruled the teenager's death was contributed to by medical neglect and " could have been prevented".
This has sparked concerns from assistant coroner Kate Ainge, who has written to Health Secretary Sajid Javid to ask him to take action to address a national shortage of haematologists. Mr Javid will have 21 days to respond.
