N Sankar was a man of many parts. Even as he headed Sanmar Group and Chemplast, his love for sport --- especially cricket and tennis --- stood out. Sankar, who passed away on Sunday, was the president of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association in the early 1990s and the vice-president of the All India Tennis Association, but that's not all.
At a time when there wasn't much money to be made out of cricket, Sankar's Sanmar family ran the famous Jolly Rovers Club --- one of the prime institutions of cricket in the city. While Jolly Rovers completed 50 years a couple of years ago, Sankar was the promoter of Alwarpet CC, another important club in the Chennai circuit, as well.
