Officials in Sanibel, Florida, are strongly advising residents to evacuate the barrier island as it prepares for the arrival of tropical storm-force winds on Wednesday afternoon. City Manager Dana Souza emphasized the importance of leaving the area promptly during the last pre-hurricane update on Facebook Live.
Souza highlighted that while many residents have already heeded the evacuation advice, there are still individuals remaining on the island. He urged those residents to depart as soon as possible to ensure their safety.
Lee County is actively receiving evacuees at shelters with ample capacity available. Residents seeking more information can visit the county website or contact the United Way Emergency Hotline by dialing 211.
The city manager also discussed the anticipated impacts of the approaching storm, noting an increase in expected rainfall to 6 to 12 inches. Of particular concern is the storm surge, with the National Hurricane Center predicting a surge of 8 to 12 feet for Lee County, reminiscent of the surge experienced during Hurricane Ian.
Souza cautioned that the storm surge is expected to peak on Wednesday evening and into early Thursday morning, underscoring the urgency for residents to evacuate promptly to ensure their safety and well-being.
