An adult in San Francisco has died of an overdose involving MGM-15, a lab-made opioid derived from a kratom compound, the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) said Wednesday, Oct. 21. It is the first known case of its kind in the city, according to the medical examiner's office. The person died in late September after taking tablets of a type sold in smoke shops and gas stations, CBS News Bay Area reported.
The product was labeled "Script Botanicals x Maui Labs" and did not list kratom or 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) on its packaging. The packaging sold four 100-milligram tablets for about $20, according to the San Francisco Standard.
