San Francisco 49ers send Leeds United message as NFL franchise's eye-watering valuation revealed

San Francisco 49ers sent a number of messages on social media to Leeds United during their 6-2 win over Cagliari on Sunday. The Whites rounded off their pre-season with a comprehensive victory against the Serie B side thanks to goals from Rodrigo Moreno (3), Patrick Bamford (2) and Robin Koch.

Jesse Marsch named a strong team for Leeds’ final friendly of the summer but found themselves frustrated in the opening half an hour. They were made to wait until the 35th minute to open the scoring as Rodrigo finished off smartly inside the area.

Rodrigo and Bamford then added quickfire second and third goals, before Cagliari scored twice inside a minute midway through the second half to reduce the deficit to one. But Leeds ensured the scoreline had a comfortable look to it as Bamford, Rodrigo and Koch rounded off the scoring.

With a 44% stake in the club, the 49ers’ influence on Leeds will have never been greater during a summer transfer window. And clearly they have been keeping a watching eye over Leeds after making a number of comments on the match against Cagliari.

After Rodrigo’s opener – arguably the pick of the goals – the 49ers responded to one of Leeds’ Instagram posts with a message that read: ‘what a finish!’ Upon full time, they then tweeted the Whites saying ‘Sundays are just better with football. #MOT.”

Leeds fans will be hoping that the 49ers’ messages are a sign of the commitment they will show to the club in the coming years. At $5.1 billion, they have just been named the fifth most valuable NFL franchise by Sportico and that sort of money could go a long way to helping Leeds progress up the Premier League.
