Heartbreaking loss for SDSU

San Diego State blew a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter and endured a 32-28 loss to Fresno State. It was one of the greatest comebacks in recent Mountain West Conference history.

Fresno State had a successful two-point conversion and recovered an onside kick with 1:05 left in the game. Fresno State quarterback Jake Haener threw the game-winning touchdown with 56 seconds left in the game.

The Bulldogs never gave up and tracked down the Aztecs. San Diego State was limited to seven points in the second half. Fresno State needed everything to work out in the team’s favor and that is what happened.

After Fresno State took an early 3-0 lead, San Diego State quarterback Jalen Mayden capped off a strong drive with a 28-yard touchdown run that put the Aztecs ahead by 4 points in the first quarter. San Diego State added to the lead, 14-3, with a 26-yard touchdown pass to Kenan Christon at the 12:19 mark in the second quarter.

Fresno State responded with a Nikko Remigio receiving touchdown in the second quarter. The Bulldogs trailed 14-10.

San Diego State running back Jordan Byrd fumbled the ball and turned it over at the 7:52 mark in the second quarter. Fresno State did not capitalize on the optimal field position after the turnover.

At the tail end of an 81-yard drive, Mayden’s one-yard touchdown run gave the Aztecs a 21-10 lead with 1:45 left in the first half. With 10:24 to go in the third quarter, Mayden threw an interception to Fresno State defensive back Cam Lockridge.

Jesse Matthews caught a touchdown pass from Mayden that extended the lead to 18 points, 28-10, for San Diego State in the third quarter. Fresno State’s special teams unit blocked a punt, which gave the Bulldogs great field position. Fresno State quarterback Jake Haener closed out the third quarter with a back shoulder touchdown pass to Zane Pope. Fresno State cut the deficit to 11 points, 28-17.

San Diego State safety Patrick McMorris came up with a crucial interception in the end zone with six minutes left in the fourth quarter. Just when it seemed like San Diego State was in the driver’s seat, Fresno State stormed back for a 32-28 win.

In Week 10, San Diego State will return home to host UNLV.
