'Samrat Prithviraj' box office collection day 1: Akshay Kumar starrer off to a Rs 10 crore start amidst mixed reviews

Akshay Kumar's historical drama, 'Samrat Prithviraj' opened to mixed reviews and average numbers at the box office. The film directed by Dr. Chandraprakash Dwived was off to a slow start on Friday, reports boxofficeindia.com. However, it seems that over the course of the day, the film's ticket sales picked up and managed to reach double-digits at the ticket windows.

According to the early estimates, the film is expected to earn around Rs 10-11 crore on day one at the box office. The film reportedly raked in most of its collections from UP, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.

The film reportedly underperformed in the Maharashtra and South sectors. The numbers were far lower than the collections earned by Alia Bhatt's 'Gangubai Kathiwadi'.

The collections could not beat Akshay's previous release 'Bachchan Pandey' as the film that release early this year had the extended Holi weekend playing to its advantage. However, the film's collections were hampered by 'The Kashmir Files' that was dominating the box office.

Meanwhile, the South releases have also seen low numbers at the Hindi box office despite the hype. According to the report, the collections for 'Major' are just around Rs 1 crore and 'Vikram' around Rs 25 lakh in non-South circuits.

Ahead of film's release, Kumar has said that the historical drama is one of the most important films of his career and called it his 'legacy project'.

The actor said to the media, "'Samrat Prithviraj' is a very important film in my career. It is my legacy project because I'm getting to honour the legendary Samrat Prithviraj Chauhan. I'm fortunate that I'm getting to bring his heroism and life on screen."

"I hope this film inspires many to lead their life with strong values and get the courage to stand up against any and every evil. Samrat Prithviraj, to me, is a rare project."

Explaining why it is such a special film for him, he said, "It combines my love for India, enables me to tell a story that is rooted in India's history and folklore and is also a film for every audience segment. As an actor, I love telling stories that can reach everyone and people can have a community viewing experience. Samrat Prithviraj is a film that sits at the top of the ladder.

"It is also a spectacle that will leave audiences awe-struck."
