Sam Smith refund update after show cancelled mid performance

AO Arena has issued an update after San Smith's show was cancelled mid performance.

The singer was performing at the AO Arena in Manchester on Wednesday for their "Gloria the Tour" to a packed out audience when fans described how the stadium went dark. After just four songs Sam went off stage for some time and some people speculated there was a power cut.

A short time later thousands were told the show had ended due to "vocal issues" and to leave the arena. Fans said they were "disappointed" about having to leave the venue.

Now AO Arena has issued an update to fans regarding their tickets and confirmed there are "no plans to reschedule". One fan shared her email from SeeTickets, on behalf of AO Arena, which told her the concert was cancelled due to "circumstances beyond our control".

It also confirmed two further tour dates in Birmingham and Glasgow would not be going ahead.

The email read: "We're getting in touch to let you know that due to circumstances beyond our control, the event which was being held at AO Arena, Manchester on Wednesday, 24/05/2023 won't be going ahead and there are no plans to reschedule.

"We will automatically issue a full refund back to your original payment method, and your refund will be with you within 28 working days. We are very sorry to have to announce this news and apologise for any upset this may cause."

A further section in the email explained that organisers had "explored all options" to prevent the show from being cancelled, including alternative dates and venues, but they had "no luck".

A spokesperson on behalf of Sam Smith said: "Doctors have advised due to a vocal cord injury; Sam must have complete vocal rest. Sam is heartbroken to have to have had to cancel these shows, but they have been told by doctors that if they keep singing, they will do permanent damage to their voice.

"If they take some rest they will be able to perform again."

Fan Nicola, who did not want to give her last name, told the ECHO she had been given tickets to see Sam Smith as a Christmas present. She went to the show with her husband and overheard people from Liverpool had booked hotels especially for the occasion.

Speaking to the ECHO, Nicola said: “The show was good, the music was good. Everybody seemed to be enjoying it and then they went off stage. We just thought they were going off stage to get changed.

"Then they said ‘sorry folks we’ve got a technical issue. We’re going to put lights on, use rest rooms.’ After 15 minutes the lights were on and everyone was getting drinks. Then they said sorry the show is cancelled we’re really sorry Manchester.

"It’s just disappointing. I heard people saying ‘we’re really disappointed, we’ve come from Liverpool and we’ve paid for a Premier Inn."
