KANSAS CITY, Mo. — In the days after he signed the richest contract in North American sports, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes texted a teammate.

Chris Jones had been in search of his own contract extension that summer of 2020, and Mahomes’ message to him correlated the circumstances of the two.

“I left some (money) on the table for you,” Mahomes wrote, as Jones recalled.
