Sam Lammers set to leave Rangers on permanent transfer

Sam Lammers will leave Rangers on a permanent deal this summer.

The 27-year-old only joined the Ibrox club last summer under Michael Beale. The Dutchman was a big-money signing from Atalanta, with Rangers parting with £3.5m for the attacker.

However, his time in a Light Blues jersey failed to work out, and he left during the winter break after managing just two goals.

He moved to FC Utrecht in the Netherlands where he enjoyed a much more fruitful spell in front of goal, scoring 11 times during the second half of the season.

He broke an Eredivisie record by managing to score in seven successive matches too.

His red-hot streak was put down to his positioning on the field, being utlisied in the number nine position as opposed to in attacking midfield.

Lammers' upturn in form post-January led to question marks over whether he would return to Rangers this summer, where he has three years left on his contract.

However, Rangers Review states the Ibrox club has made the decision to sell Lammers rather than prolong his stay.

This has opened up the possibility of Utrecht re-signing him on a permanent basis, although, it does appear that other Dutch top-flight teams are keen too, as well as two other European sides.

Rangers are believed to remain hopeful of earning a profit on the player despite the lack of success with this signing.

Lammers was criticised for his lack of cutting-edge in front of goal during his short time in Glasgow under both Beale and Philippe Clement.

But he put this down to never being afforded the chance of playing up top.

He said: "I played more at No.10 at Rangers. I didn't actually play a single match there as a striker.”
