Sam Heughan admits he can 'see Outlander without him' as he discusses future of series

Outlander's Sam Heughan opened up on the future of the series ahead of the sixth season, revealing he can see the series continue without him.

Sam, 41, is best known for his role as Highland warrior Jamie Fraser, alongside his on-screen wife Claire Fraser, played by Caitriona Balfe in the historical fantasy series.

In a recent interview with The Times, the actor confessed the series could carry on without him in the titular role of Jamie as Outlander author Diana Gabaldon focusses on other characters.

He told the publication: “I know how it ends, Diana has told me, but we still have a long way to go before we get to that. Diana Gabaldon has so many other books, like the Lord John series, and she’s writing a prequel to Outlander about Jamie’s parents. So I can absolutely see Outlander without me.”

“Diana Gabaldon has this whole world in her head, and how she ties up all those loose ends I have no idea,” he said.

“This season we do start to pull on more of what’s going on in, dare I say, other parts of time. We’re really starting to see these other stories, a lot of the other characters have their own storylines. This season, and definitely next season, we are going to see a lot more of that coming into play.”

Outlander has skyrocketed the careers of all the actors involved, thanks to a dedicated and loyal fanbase across the world.

Sam noted the 'Outlander effect' as to why more and more big budget productions are choosing to film in his native homeland.

He told the publication: “There is a reason why all these productions are now coming to Scotland. It’s because we have helped build up and train brilliant crews and have really invested in infrastructure."

He said he is 'proud' of how far Outlander has come after it started off in a 'derelict warehouse' and now it's a 'multimillion-dollar facility' with costume departments and set designers.

In recent years, Scotland has hosted some of the biggest productions in the world like Avengers: Infinity War, The Flash, The Batman and Batgirl, which is currently still filming in Glasgow.
