Sam Fender's Glastonbury tribute to home noticed by viewers back in Newcastle

Sam Fender paid a subtle but poignant tribute to home at Glastonbury, that went unnoticed by many, but was picked up on by people watching back on Tyneside.

After an already amazing 2022, which has seen his fanbase grow even more and him and his band earn five star reviews thanks to a strong of sell out gigs across the UK and Europe, as well as winning at the Brits and NME Awards, North Shields musician Sam finally got to make Glasto debut on Friday night.

The area in front of the world famous Pyramid Stage was jam packed as Sam and the lads burst onto stage not long after 8pm and launched into a set that fired on all cylinders. There was a distinct Geordie feel to proceedings, with saxophone player Johnny Bluehat, as he so often does, wearing a NUFC top, a Magpies flag on stage and Sam swigging from a bottle of Newcastle Brown Ale before dedicating The Dying Light to any Geordies who were in the audience.

Sam and his band most definitely did Newcastle and North Shields proud with their stellar presence and there was a lot of love for them online from those who tuned into the BBC's live coverage o f their epic performance. And something Sam was wearing on his jacket became a talking point for many. Having been made a patron of the charity earlier this year and raising over £130,000 for them with his recent fundraiser at O2 City Hall Newcastle, Sam wore a yellow North East Homeless badge as he stormed Glastonbury.

North East Homeless posted a picture of Sam in action on their Facebook page and, in the comments section, one of their followers wrote: "It’s about the badge, the meaning, the absolute support for those that need it."

Another reacted: "Seen him live once, cant wait to see him again. Proper grass roots lad, using his platform to raise awareness for the homeless.. well done sam," with a third, picking up on the same thing, responding: "Spotted his badge!!! Smashing it Sam."
