Sally Nugent shocked Wayne Rooney accepted Amazon documentary after bad first interview

BBC Breakfast star Sally Nugent revealed she was shocked Wayne Rooney agreed to be part of the new Rooney documentary.

The 50-year-old television presenter did his first-ever television interview 20 years ago.

At the time, she worked at BBC North West Tonight as a sports presenter and Wayne was only 16.

He later confessed to her that he was 'too young to do it'.

And now, Wayne - along with his wife Coleen Rooney - discussed his career, mistakes he had made as well as his affairs on his Amazon documentary.

Speaking to Mirror, Sally said: "I did his first-ever television interview exactly 20 years ago and he was 16 and we spoke about it after it was obviously on reflection he says he was too young to do it.

"He was out of his depth completely at the time. And I thought the film [new Amazon documentary] was incredible. I can't believe he agreed to do it because it's full access, isn't it?"

She continued: "But he was really, really honest and open and mature and had obviously thought a lot about the mistakes he'd made in his life and why they'd happened. It was really brave."

Former Manchester United player Wayne previously discussed how he felt handling football and 'everything else around it' when he was so young.

"You’re not prepared,” Rooney explained in an interview with BBC Breakfast earlier this month.

“I’ve always felt that I was prepared for the football, and I felt I was good enough, obviously, to play. But for everything else around it, I was nowhere near prepared.”

His Amazon Prime programme sheds light on his otherworldly ability, the flashpoints which defined his England career and his rollercoaster relationship with his wife Coleen.

The film is directed by BAFTA winner Matt Smith, who has previously made documentaries on Rio Ferdinand and David Beckham, and produced by Lorton Entertainment.

Coleen even shared her thoughts on Wayne's infidelities and said she learned to 'live with' what he had done.

She says on camera that she and Wayne are not “lovey-dovey” after he slept with prostitutes behind her back.

“We’re not the lovey-dovey type anyway and we like to have a laugh together and we work well together, and we’ve got four kids,” she explains.
