With a 17.33% increase in global Cava sales between 2020 and 2021, and the UK being the fourth largest international export market for the bubbly, Majestic is predicting a Cava Christmas this year. Majestic predicts that the more traditional options will remain staples at the Christmas lunch table such as Champagne and English Sparkling, yet is anticipating one bottle of Cava a minute will fly off shelves this festive period.
This correlates to an increase of 50% year-on-year. While Cava has previously struggled reputationally against its European bubbly rivals, many consider it to be closest in taste to Champagne at a fraction of the price point. Crafted from native Spanish grapes including Macabeo, Parellada, and Xarel-lo, Cava undergoes a second fermentation in the bottle known as ‘método tradicional’ - copied from ‘méthode champenoise’ in Champagne.
After Cava is likely to be enjoyed for breakfast, Majestic is then expecting customers to switch to classics for Christmas lunch or evening drinking on the big day itself.
Despite New World wine taking off year-round, this Christmas the retailer is preparing for a rise in sales of Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Chianti - and Champagne.
