St Kilda are on the verge of confirming Ross Lyon's sensational return to the club as senior coach.
Lyon met with the Saints' hierarchy again on Sunday to thrash out the final details of what is expected to be a three-year deal.
The 55-year-old's appointment could be confirmed as soon as Monday.
It comes after St Kilda sacked Brett Ratten this month as a result of a football department review, despite handing him a two-year contract extension in July.
Club president Andrew Bassat admitted Ratten's extension was a mistake after the Saints decided they needed a different coach who could bring a "ruthless commitment to football excellence" to the club.
Chief executive Simon Lethlean, football director Jason Blake and incoming football boss Geoff Walsh were all present at Sunday's meeting with Lyon, which was held at Bassat's home in Melbourne.
Lyon, who led St Kilda to losing grand finals in 2009 and 2010, hopes to end the competition's longest premiership drought, which dates back to the club's only VFL flag in 1966.
He said last week said he was keen to return to the Saints, 11 years after leaving the club to take up an offer from Fremantle.
"My heart's been opened up to St Kilda through Andrew (Bassat) and Simon (Lethlean) and their board, and obviously I've got a strong connection (to the club)," Lyon told the Nine Network on Thursday.
"It was a tumultuous time, 11 years ago. From afar you watch and I don't like the narrative around St Kilda.
"Maybe it's deserved but sometimes it's a bit disrespectful. Hopefully it can get to a point where I'm able to roll up the sleeves and help get in and change that."
Lyon's first stint at St Kilda lasted five years, from 2007 to 2011.
He led the Saints to four straight finals series, including grand finals in two successive years, before his switch to Fremantle.
Lyon guided the Dockers to their only grand final appearance in 2013 but was sacked in 2019 after four seasons without finals action.
