Sainsbury's shoppers outraged after supermarket charges £22 for whole chicken

We've all noticed skyrocketing prices over the past year as the cost of living crisis rages on, but some shoppers at Sainsbury's have been left feeling particularly out of pocket - after spotting a whole chicken on sale for over £22.

The highly-priced chicken was posted on social media by a man named Marcus, who spotted it on Saturday and said it had left him feeling like "the cost of living is really costing".

He also shared a picture of the chicken in question, which had a label on it showing that it weighed 2.292kg, and was priced at £9.80 per kilo, making the total cost of the meat an eye-watering £22.46.

Marcus, who posts under the username @marcusjdl, posted his findings in response to another tweet which read: "What was a recent price change that made you feel that cost of living is really costing? Mine was deffo McDonald's apple pie going from 99p to £1.49."

And the man shared the picture of the Sainsbury's chicken with the caption: "This yesterday."

While the price of the chicken is staggering, the label included in the photo shows that it was part of Sainsbury's So Organic range, making it one of the more expensive whole chickens available in the supermarket.

According to the shop's website, a non-organic whole chicken weighing between 2.2kg and 2.3kg should be priced at a more reasonable £5.75, while even a Taste The Difference free-range chicken of the same weight should be around £15.

However, commenters on Marcus' tweet were baffled by the staggering price of the organic chicken, with some even claiming they "gasped audibly" when they saw the label.

One person wrote: "I gasped audibly. What the actual f**k? Need to be making stock from the bones for that price."

While another added: "Chicken used to be the cheap meat option. I don't even want to know how much a leg of lamb must cost nowadays."

And a third said: "HOW much?"

"I thought £15 for a roasted chicken in a supermarket in Barbados was ridiculous!", a fourth exclaimed.

A Sainsbury's spokesperson said: "With costs going up, we are working hard to keep prices low. In the last two years, we have invested over £550m into lowering prices as part of our goal to put food back at the heart of Sainsbury's.

"We're committed to doing everything we can to support customers with the rising cost of living. Through initiatives such as our Aldi Price Match campaign, Price Lock and My Nectar Prices, customers can find low prices on the products they buy most often both in stores and online – including chicken breasts, chicken thighs, chicken wings and whole chickens."
