Sainsbury's has moved to defend new packaging for its minced beef after shoppers said it ruined the product. There have been complaints that the new vacuum pack turns the meat to 'mush'.
However, Sainsbury's said the new containers used 55% less plastic than the previous packets. However, according to the BBC, shoppers have said that the packets turn the meat into "mushed off-cuts".
Sainsbury's said it was the first UK retailer to vacuum-pack all beef, which it said saved 450 tonnes of plastic every year. It has also printed leaflets explaining the change to customers.
