Sainsbury's change to Nectar cards announced as loyalty scheme revamped

Sainsbury's has announced a big change to its Nectar Card loyalty scheme affecting shoppers.

Nectar card points can currently be picked up from hundreds of stores across the country - including Sainsbury's, Argos, Habitat, VUE cinemas and on eBay.

Now, the supermarket giant has changed how its Nectar Points work - and it's good news for customers.

The retailed confirmed the launch of a new Nectar Donate option, which will benefit charities such as Alzheimer’s Research UK and Macmillan Cancer Support.

Users will be able to donate Nectar points to a good cause of their choosing, which will then be converted into funding without any fees attached, Manchester Evening News reports.

The minimum value that can be given is 200 points, the equivalent of £1.

This is the same value as what Nectar points are worth if you were to spend them in stores at Sainsbury's.

You get one Nectar point for every £1 spent, with one Nectar point worth 0.5p in return.

This means if you earn one point from a purchase it's the equivalent of 0.5% cashback.

Nectar Donate is provided in partnership with Crowdfunder and is available to use any time on the Nectar digital app.

All customers will need to do is create an account with Crowdfunder, link their Nectar account and they will then be able to donate to their chosen cause from those charities available.

Nectar head of loyalty and CRM Alex Naisby said: “We’re proud to have teamed up with Crowdfunder to launch Nectar Donate, a new and simple way for customers to support the charities and causes they really care about with their Nectar points.

“Our customers have always been extremely generous whenever we have run charity donation campaigns in the past and we know many of them are interested in supporting local charities.

“So, whether it’s donating those forgotten points or a bank of saved-up points, we’re making it even easier for customers to turn their Nectar points into positivity.”

Simon Deverell, founder and creative Director at Crowdfunder said: "Nectar Donate gives charities the opportunity to benefit from Nectar customers donating their points to good causes.

"At a time when charities have suffered massively due to the pandemic and donors have felt the pinch, this amazing partnership creates an entirely new way for people to give to, and fundraise for, the causes they care about."
