A group of sailors have been found clinging to the hull of their capsized catamaran in remote waters in the Northern Territory.

A rescue helicopter located four people in the Timor Sea near the Tiwi Islands on Friday after a distress beacon was activated.

The CareFlight crew dropped a life raft to the group in Bowen Bay, southwest of Bathurst Island and about 80km north of Darwin.

An Australian Border Force vessel was also deployed and its crew rescued the sailors from the ocean later the same day.

None had suffered injuries.
